Tour Valencia on foot, by bike or online and learn the story behind this artist

Joaquín Sorolla is one of the most famous and international Valencians in our history.

Valencia was the place that gave him birth, that inspired him and that defined his style, influenced by the lights of the Mediterranean, the Levantine beaches, the daily life of its neighborhoods and daily life with his family.

In short, the essence of the city was a fundamental component in this artist's work.

To celebrate the Year of Sorolla, in 2023 more guided tours are available than ever. Read over the tours available and choose how you will pay homage to the painter on the 100th anniversary of his passing.

Gastronomy and tourism. A culinary theme around the Hispanic Society and Joaquín Sorolla's Vision of Spain

In 1911, Sorolla was commissioned to decorate with his works the library of the Hispanic Society of New York. In response, he traveled to every corner of Spain to soak up the cuisine, festivals and landscapes that he would end up capturing on his canvases.

Now, chef Jorge de Andrés has created the “Menu Sorolla, Vision and Flavors of Spain”, consisting of fourteen dishes that will make you fall in love even more with the works of the artist.

This wonderful tour begins by walking the streets of Valencia, the Museum of Fine Arts and ends at the Restaurante Vertical.

The spaces of Sorolla and the Mediterranean: a bicycle touring route through the main icons of art, architecture and design

Set within the framework of Valencia as Design Capital 2022, this route is done on bicycle and visits those places in Valencia most closely associated with his life and work, including a ride through the Turia Garden, an immense green space full of architectural works.

It then goes to the City of Arts and Sciences to cap off this exceptional tour in the seaside neighborhoods of El Cabanyal and La Malvarrosa, both points of inspiration for the artist.

Combined visit Benlliure family home and Museum of Fine Arts

Contemporaries, Valencian and artists, the sculptor Mariano Benlliure and Sorolla struck up an intense friendship and exchanged works on numerous occasions. Sorolla painted Benlliure and his family, and in return, Benlliure, knowing how much the painter liked sculpture, gave him several works of great sentimental value. This guided tour begins at La Casa Museo Benlliure, the home of the Benlliure family, including his brother, painter José Benlliure, and ends at the Museum of Fine Arts in Valencia, which are two great places to see works by both artists.

The Casa Museo Benlliure provides an intimate setting with magnificent works, as well as a cabinet with small pieces, reflecting the course Sorolla would take from then on.

And once in the Museum of Fine Arts, you will enjoy works created with all kinds of materials, since Benlliure was a sculptor as versatile as he was universal. As well as the works of Sorolla that are exhibited there, of course.

Visit Benlliure's sculptures in Valencia

And if you want to find out more about the work of the universal sculptor Mariano Benlliure, we recommend this other tour. He doesn't have his own museum, since his art is found throughout the city because the streets are his museum.

On this guided tour, you will walk through downtown Valencia and learn about his monuments on both public and private property.
