Sala Ultramar
Calle Alcira 9, 46007 - València
TOURISTIC AREA: Historical center
Sala Ultramar came into being intending to make many Valencians’ dream come true: the opening of a Grand Theatre for Underwater Opera, which was to be used for hosting the most intimate and daring artistic celebrations. This tiny grand theatre is both a ship and a port, a shipyard for crying and for cheerful dismantling, a look-out tower and a pirate frigate, an albatross with a very good head for heights and a submarine with treasures from the abyss, a beach for disembarking and a council for shipwrecks involving all kinds of people.
The Sala Ultramar venue will host: Spoken theatre and silent performances featuring song and dance from now and endlessly into the future, stern comedy, sublime cabaret, post-urban dramas and rural, suggestive vaudeville, as well as pre-Columbian dance, post-dramatic tableaux and zarzuela from the tundra. In short, it boasts any kind of performance that leaves spectators feeling like their hearts and minds have gone through the wringer, and makes them want to seek out new storms after the show.
Sala Ultramar opened as a grocery store when deep down, it would need to be engaged in a hotchpotch of activities... Financed by multinational companies that ceased their operations before the Panama Canal was built, it is run by sixteen very charming skippers who enjoy wine and have promised not to argue on the high seas or when the tide falls... Sala Ultramar is a port in the heart of Valencia, but also a sailing boat in the middle of all international waters. Its fish market, with gargoyles hanging from its roof which sputter water inwards, does not use a payment system involving any kind of ideological, aesthetic and moral prices.
