Valencia: triathlon city
Valencia boasts unique spots for triathlons. The city's location right beside the sea, climate and surroundings make it the perfect space for this Olympic sport.
300 days of sunshine a year, 20 kilometres of beaches and almost flat terrain make it easy for sports like running, cycling and swimming to find their Olympics. So, it is not surprising that the city has a long history as the setting for national and international triathlon events dating back to 1992, when the first City of Valencia Triathlon was held at Malvarrosa Beach.
Today there are two fixed events on Valencia's calendar, the Triatló de València (Triathlon of Valencia) in June and Mediterránea Triatlón València (Valencia Triathlon) in September. COMPETITIONS
The doyen of triathlons
The Triatló Popular de València (Valencia Public Triathlon), commonly known as the Triatló Platja de Pinedo (Pinedo Beach Triathlon), is held before the arrival of summer. It is organized by the amateur club C. T. A Corre-cuita. This is a sprint distance competition: 750 m of swimming in warm Mediterranean waters, 20 km of cycling and a 5 km foot race along the beachside promenade.
The competition is open to all, whether members or not. So, if you want to get your start in this event, it is perfect for beginners.
Mediterranea Triatlón València
This is one of the most important events on the national and international stage. This race is held each year in the area around La Marina de València, with the Veles e Vents Building as a landmark.
The Mediterranea Triatlón València is part of a circuit of public competitions also organized in Castellón and Alicante. They are open to all, with distances from supersprint and very different formats, including relays and doubles.
Where to train for a triathlon in Valencia
If you love the triathlon, Valencia and its surrounding area offer you an incomparable environment where you can train for this sport. For swimming, if you opt for the open water, there are kilometres of beaches. On Malvarrosa Beach, at Mendizábal Street, there is a swimming lane open year-round, 200 and 500 metres from the shore. It is clearly marked off with buoys so that you can train in complete safety. Municipal pools also offer lap swim lanes. And if you come with a team, ask about hiring the pool for your training.
Valencia offers a contrast between flat coastal areas and mountainous inland areas that is perfect for cycling training. You will also find tracks and trails where you can enjoy running, like in the Turia Gardens, with more than 9 kilometres that are perfect for this sport. And there are another seven running routes through the entire city and surrounding area.
