World Tourism Day 2023

Categories: parties and traditions.

TOURISTIC AREA: Historical center

In 2023, World Tourism Day highlights the need for more and better investments focused on people, the planet and prosperity

As on every September 27 since 1980, tourism celebrates its international day. Today more than ever, tourism has to function as an investment vehicle for people, the planet and prosperity.

Which is why the World Tourism Organization has chosen as this year's theme "Tourism and Green Investments", to aid the transition to greener and more sustainable tourism over time.

It is important to make sure that tourism activities do their part in solving the climate emergency. In fact, it is one of the most urgent priorities of the next ten years.

This is quite a responsibility for Valencia, which as the European Green Capital in 2024, is working to become a driving force for change and an example for other cities.

The agenda features several activities so you can get involved in this important task, that of rethinking tourism as an engine of development, also through education and employment, and on the impact of tourism on the planet and the opportunities to grow more sustainably.

Recycle your Valencia Tourist Card and get a gift

Did you buy a Valencia Tourist Card and are now going back home?

Return it to the tourist office in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento and get one of 50 keychains and 50 wallets from "A la lona de València" for doing your part to recycle the card.

Small details also make a difference, more so in this case. You will be supporting a project that gives a second life to advertising canvases, while providing an opportunity for people with mental illnesses to learn, grow and gain skills.

Try horchata and discover one of the healthiest drinks

Valencia is the birthplace of horchata, a drink made with a tuber called chufa (tiger nut) that is grown in the Valencia farmland. Thanks to the sandy soil due to its proximity to the coast, a climate with hot summers and high humidity, the chufa grown close to the city has enviable qualities.

You probably didn't know that horchata is a healthy drink. And do you know why?

It's because it doesn't contain gluten nor lactose. It's also low in sodium; rich in vitamins C and E, which act as antioxidants; it provides minerals such as magnesium, phosphorus, calcium, iron and potassium; and it has oleic acid, so it helps control cholesterol and facilitates digestion, since it contains the enzymes amylase and lipase. And it has arginine, which helps lower blood pressure.

In its sugar-free version, it's a superfood that you have to try!

Come to Plaza del Ayuntamiento on Wednesday, September 27 and try one of the 1,500 servings; there will be two sessions, the first starting at 11:00 a.m. and another at 5:00 p.m. until it's all gone.

By the way, be sure to pick up a tasting coupon at our tourist offices before getting an horchata. The horchata cart will be located on the corner of the square with Calle Sangre.

Enjoy!
