Gallery 5 of the IVAM hosts an exhibit by Aref el Rayess

From May 11 to September 10, 2023, the IVAM will be showcasing an artistic exhibit of Lebanese Aref el Rayess.

Born in Aley in 1928, he started painting at the age of 11. After his first exhibit in Beirut at the age of 20, he began his artistic career leaving his mark on several countries, including Algeria, Senegal, France and Saudi Arabia.

Known primarily as a painter, he also practiced engraving, sculpture and tapestry. This self-taught artist was known for his concern with the political, social and cultural crises of his day, issues that wouldn't let him look the other way.

Gallery 5 at the IVAM is exhibiting his works from the 60s to the 80s, with which he intented to unite Western modernity with other modernities, thanks to everything he learned along his extensive journey.

Enjoy this spectacular representation through a seismograph that embodies desires and frustrations such as the insurrection of the Druze people (1958), the Algerian war of independence, the liberation struggles of the "Third World" and the war in Lebanon.

“Man is a whole that embodies both means and objectives.”
